What is your compelling reason? #MindsetMonday

As I have shared before, ideas will pop into my head, and I tend to jump in without much planning and figure out where things will take me.

I heard this in a podcast one day, and although I do not know the source, it challenged my thinking:

“The difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is that successful people launch.”

Unknown

Now there is more to “success” than people “do stuff,” and as I have shared before, “success” is a very personal concept, and I think this is an essential conversation students should be leading in schools in terms of their own lives, not having the idea defined for them.

Still, I like to jump in and see where things go.

In June of 2021, I thought about how I could best support educators with their personal and professional goals and the intersection of the two. I decided to throw an email out and see if anyone was interested in being a part of this community, which led to the “Health, Habits, and Mindset” Facebook group. (Feel free to join!)

As I thought about the process, I wanted to share a video each week with a “lesson” I learned, and here is the first one on the idea of “What is your compelling reason?”

I discuss how we must think about what thing will pull us toward change. I have been struggling with weight for years, and truthfully, I wanted to look better. But it wasn’t until I realized that I was getting into a weight range that could have severe consequences in a time of Covid that I put in place the things that would improve my health. I want to be around for my kids as long as possible, and THAT was the real push for change in my life. Of course, I want to look good as possible, but that wasn’t enough to draw me to change my habits for the long term. It had to be something compelling that drew me to it.

I encourage you to either watch the video or listen on SoundCloud, Spotify, or Apple Podcasts, and think about these three questions:

  1. Why are you wanting to make a positive change?
  2. What is your compelling reason?
  3. If you are successful through this process, what would that look like to you?

You can reflect on them at any time, or you can join the discussion in our Facebook community!

I look forward to sharing more of these lessons coming out every week on #MindsetMonday!
